Side tables have been especially used by Biedermeier cabinetmakers to verify the depth of their craftsmanship. They are some sort of "business cards". The master of the above table gives proof of the finest penwork decorations in the first place. Comparable pieces are illustrated "Innenraeume..." (Empire and Biedermeier Interiors in Austria/Hungary), J. Folnesics, Vienna, 1920. The above table is walnut veneered on oak and pine, bordered with maple, inlaid with maple and penwork decorated. Clismos-type legs. Drawer with fitted interior. Austria, circa 1820.
