Important Biedermeier sofa by Mainz master cabinetmaker Wilhelm Kimbel (1786-1869) for Hortense de Beauharnais, daughter of Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte's wife Josephine de Beauharnais from her 1st marriage with Alexander de Beauharnais. Hortense, by the way, was mother of Napoleon the III. The sofa is part of Hortense's property (Castle Arenenberg in Switzerland). This sofa is of superb quality in walnut with woodcarved winged Napoleonic eagles. South Germany (Mainz), circa 1835.
